The New York Percussion Department, a local drum ensemble comprised of twelve members competed in the prestigious Drum Corps Associates World Championship in Pennsylvania Labor Day Weekend.

The success of this drum ensemble reflects the recent resurgence of Bishop Kearney High School’s Alumni Marching Band—a signature group whose members, as Kearney students, made a worldwide mark over the nearly four decades of the school’s existence. Ten of the group’s members have been performing together since their days in the Bishop Kearney High School band, and continue to perform with the Alumni Marching Band.

“We’re honored by the recognition from The Drum Corps Associates,” said Ken McAlpin, a member of the ensemble and president of McAlpin Industries. McAlpin is also a member of Bishop Kearney’s Board of Trustees. “We are so gratified to know that our level of performance meets the highest standard, and we’re optimistic about our chances of a very good showing at this competition.” In preparation for the competition, the New York Percussion Department, performed a dress rehearsal at McAlpin Industries (255 Hollenbeck St.) on August 29th from 5:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.

Members include: Jim Clements (Class of 1969), Steve DeBusk (Class of 1973), Tom Erb (Class of 1971), Doug Kleinhans (former BK drum teacher), Genny Leone (Class of 1970), Mary Joy Lipari (Class of 1977), Ken McAlpin (Class of 1973), Doug Morrow (Class of 1978), John Rafalak (Class of 1969), David Scheible (Junior at BK), Fred Scheible (Class of 1976), and Nicole Siniscarco (a percussion student at Nazareth College).

The Bishop Kearney Alumni Marching Band, which formed in 2004, performs regularly at community events and in conjunction with current Bishop Kearney High School students. Most recently, they were highlighted at the Irondequoit Fourth of July Celebration, and will perform in the Bishop Kearney Homecoming Parade and at the Football Game on Saturday, October 15th.

“The entire Kearney family is so proud of the Alumni Marching Kings—and by extension, the outstanding skill level of the Drum Corps Associates,” said Donna Dedee, president of Bishop Kearney High School. “We are so fortunate that our students today are benefiting from the tremendous example being set by these community leaders who continue to give back to Bishop Kearney—we know they will do us proud in the up coming competition.”

The Drum Corps Associates World Championship took place on September 2nd, in Scranton, PA.
